General Motors cancels plans for an electric Chevrolet Camaro, opting for a traditional engine in the 2028 model due to market shifts and EV demand changes.
General Motors has decided to scrap plans for a fully electric version of the upcoming Chevrolet Camaro successor. While there was earlier speculation that the model might transition into an electric crossover, the company is now sticking with traditional internal combustion engines. The new Camaro is expected to launch for the 2028 model year, with production starting in 2027 at the Lansing Grand River plant. It will be built on the rear-wheel-drive Alpha 2 platform, which also underpins other models from the GM group. This move reflects current market conditions: demand for electric vehicles has softened, and the removal of tax incentives in the U.S. has dampened buyer enthusiasm. Additionally, relaxed environmental regulations have reduced the pressure on automakers to electrify their lineups.Meanwhile, Chevrolet already offers electric alternatives in its lineup, including the Blazer EV SS. The new Camaro will instead focus on the classic performance characteristics that have long appealed to the model’s fans. The Camaro’s return forms part of the brand’s broader strategy as demand for electric vehicles shifts.
