BMW finishes construction of a sixth-generation battery plant in Bavaria using digital planning, BIM, drones, and AI, to support new EVs by 2026.
BMW has completed construction of a new plant for producing sixth-generation high-voltage batteries in Bavaria, located in the Irlbach and Straßkirchen districts. The facility is one of five such sites the company operates worldwide. This project was the first to be fully realized using digital planning and management. It relies on Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology and a digital twin concept that consolidates all data in a single system. A total of 62 specialized models were integrated, which helped reduce around 25,000 requests for clarification.Autonomous drones were used to monitor construction, capturing the current state of the site and comparing it with the digital model. This allowed faster identification of deviations and improved work precision. The site also employs fully paperless documentation and AI-based management systems, which will continue to be used during operations.BMW notes that this approach speeds up complex projects and enhances their quality. The development of such technologies is directly tied to the arrival of new vehicles in 2026, where modern batteries and digital solutions play a key role.
