The news of FP2 in Melbourne
Ferrari calls, Mercedes drivers respond. After Ferrari’s supremacy in FP1, the second round of free practice in Melbourne saw the response of the single-seaters powered by the power units created in Brixworth. McLaren set the best timewhich perhaps has been talked about too little this winter, with the local idol Oscar Piastri which trimmed two tenths from the Mercedes by Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The Brackley car, considered by all to be the favorite of the season, also placed George Russell on the virtual podium, 320 thousandths behind Piastri’s time.
The Englishman finished FP2 with a single thousandth of an advantage over his compatriot and former teammate Lewis Hamiltoncapable this time of staying ahead of Charles Leclerc‘only’ fifth. Verstappen, Norris, an excellent Lindblad, Hadjar and Ocon complete the top-10, the latter with a still rather convincing Haas. At the opposite end of the grid i teams most obviously in difficulty are Aston Martin and Cadillac. Significant, for the new arrivals on the grid, is the fact that Sergio Perez was unable to complete even a timed lap. The Mexican was stuck in the pits for a long time and when he got out on track he had to park his MAC-26 on the grass almost immediately.
