Volvo’s SPA3 electric platform debuts on 2027 EX60, a scalable EV architecture. It could underpin rugged SUVs, focusing on range and motors over engines.
Volvo has shared more about the upcoming SPA3 electric platform, set to debut on the 2027 EX60. Technical chief Anders Bell explained in an interview that the architecture is exceptionally flexible and can underpin vehicles of varying sizes. In his words, the SPA3 can scale across width, length, and height to cover the wide range of models Volvo has launched on different platforms in recent years. But Bell made it clear this is about technical capability—not a confirmed product plan for any specific model.Since Volvo developed the platform exclusively for electric vehicles, the elimination of combustion engines simplified scaling. There’s no need for separate architectures to accommodate different powertrains. Instead, focus shifts to range, batteries, and electric motors as the defining attributes. The SPA3 could even support a more rugged SUV than the current Cross Country offerings, though Volvo hasn’t confirmed such a vehicle is in the works. This matters for the market because, from 2026 onward, new models will increasingly rely on platform flexibility and software smarts rather than traditional engine lineups.
