Volkswagen is evaluating a new pickup truck for the U.S. market, potentially based on the Atlas platform, as part of its 2026 lineup expansion.
Volkswagen is considering launching production of a new pickup truck for the U.S. market. According to sources, the model is being evaluated as a potential replacement after the end of ID.4 electric crossover production at the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. The automaker previously announced it would stop making the ID.4 at that facility, with plans to focus on higher-volume models for North America. Among these, an updated Atlas has already been confirmed, and a new product tailored to U.S. buyer needs has been announced.volkswagen-newsroom.comThere is no official confirmation of pickup development yet, but the idea has been discussed within the company for years. Back in 2018, Volkswagen unveiled the Atlas Tanoak concept, which received positive feedback.A possible production pickup would likely be based on the Atlas platform, featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 282 horsepower, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and optional all-wheel drive. Its towing capacity could reach up to 2,268 kg.No final decision has been made on launching the model. This project reflects the brand’s effort to adapt to the market and expand its 2026 vehicle lineup into the pickup segment.
