Volkswagen has raised the bar for performance in the compact car segment with the Golf GTI EDITION 50. The 325-horsepower anniversary model has claimed the title of the fastest front-wheel drive production car around the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, completing the 20.832 km lap in just 7 minutes 44.523 seconds with Volkswagen test and development driver Benjamin Leuchter behind the wheel.
This record-breaking feat underlines the EDITION 50’s place as the most powerful and dynamically capable Golf GTI to date, surpassing all previous Volkswagen production models on the famed Eifel circuit.

A Motorsport-Inspired Anniversary Model
Designed for both track and road, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 packs 239 kW (325 PS), accelerates from 0–62 mph in 5.3 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 270 km/h. The chassis combines a MacPherson front axle with a four-link rear setup and sits 15 mm lower than a standard Golf, complete with DCC adaptive chassis control as standard. For an even sportier experience, the optional GTI Performance package EDITION 50 adds a further five millimetres of lowered suspension, 19-inch forged alloy wheels, Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres, and a lightweight R-Performance exhaust system with titanium rear silencers – the configuration used for the Nürburgring record lap.
Leuchter, intimately familiar with the Nordschleife, praised the car’s performance: “The Nordschleife is unique, with its bends, bumps, and even jumps. This GTI handles it all with incredible power, a neutral setup, and composure over every challenge. The EDITION 50 isn’t just an anniversary model – it’s a statement of what the compact segment can achieve when 50 years of GTI expertise meets modern engineering.”
Fifty Years of GTI Excellence
Since its 1976 debut, the GTI has symbolised Volkswagen’s commitment to driving pleasure, combining performance, precise handling, front-wheel drive, sporty design, and everyday usability. Each generation has refined these principles with new technology, and to date, Volkswagen has produced over 2.5 million GTIs worldwide.
The Golf GTI EDITION 50 continues this legacy, blending the classic GTI character with cutting-edge chassis and drive technology, now etched into history with its Nürburgring record lap.
