General Motors is preparing for a major change at the top. Mary Barra, the current CEO of the 117-year-old car company, is looking for someone to lead the brand into a new era. According to recent reports, Barra has her eyes on Sterling Anderson. He spent years working on high-tech projects, including a stint at Tesla. Now, he is facing a difficult trial to see if he can run one of the biggest companies in the world.

Anderson joined General Motors in June as the Chief Product Officer. This was a surprising move for the industry. Usually, people who run vehicle development at large companies have spent decades working with engines and assembly lines. Anderson comes from the world of software and automation. He led the Model X SUV project at Tesla and managed the Autopilot team from 2015 to 2016. After leaving Tesla, he started a company called Aurora that builds self-driving systems for big trucks.

Mary Barra is now 63 years old. While she has not said exactly when she will retire, she wants to make sure the company is in good hands. She is giving Anderson a “tough test” by putting him in charge of every single vehicle GM makes, including both gasoline cars and electric cars.

The main goal for Anderson is to fix the software problems that have bothered GM lately. In the past, the company struggled to launch new electric cars because the computer systems were glitchy. Barra wants GM to become a technology company that also happens to make cars. Anderson needs to prove he can handle the pressure of a giant corporation while also making sure new models come out on time and work perfectly. If he succeeds, he will be the first person from the tech industry to ever lead General Motors.

One of the biggest parts of this test involves self-driving technology. Previously, GM focused on “robotaxis” through its Cruise division. Now, the strategy is shifting. The company wants to put “eyes-off” driving features directly into the electric cars that regular people buy. This would allow drivers to let the car handle the work on the highway while they relax. Because Anderson helped build the foundation for Tesla Autopilot, Barra believes he has the right skills to make this happen for GM customers.

The stakes are high for the Detroit automaker. The car world is changing fast, and many people are switching to EVs. General Motors must compete with new rivals and prove that a legacy brand can be just as smart as a Silicon Valley startup. All eyes are now on Anderson to see if he can pass his trial and eventually take the steering wheel of the entire company.
