Global suppliers that previously operated parallel SPC systems will benefit most from AIAG and VDA reaching a common standard The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and the German Automotive Industry Association (VDA) have jointly published a harmonized handbook for statistical process control (SPC) in the automotive industry. The publication is the second AIAG-VDA core tool, after the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) manual, which creates a common framework for evaluating, monitoring and improving production processes. The SPC handbook provides a unified methodology for machine and process performance evaluation, capability studies, deviation detection and process validation, consistent with relevant international standards. It provides common terminology across global supply chains and connects SPC to established quality tools including FMEA, Control Plans and measurement systems analysis. The handbook is available in the VDA QMC webshop from 1 July 2026. Developed together with experts representing the entire automotive value chain, this handbook aims to reduce parallel quality processes in international supply chains. VDA Managing Director Jürgen Mindel said in a statement: “Today, quality is created within globally interconnected value-added networks. With the joint SPC guideline, AIAG and VDA create a unified basis for statistical process control throughout the entire supply chain. This strengthens international cooperation, increases the comparability of quality requirements and supports companies in making their processes more robust and efficient.”
