F1, Wolff has put Ferrari in his sights In statements following the recent Austrian F1 Grand Prix, Mercedes’ Toto Wolff had set his sights on Ferrari’s developments: “We are a little surprised that Ferrari is able to introduce such substantial updates. In my opinion they will soon run out of money, the money foreseen by the budget cap. We cannot do it, we do not have a sufficient margin in the spending ceiling to be able to introduce as many parts as they do. The only ones who are not slowing down the pace of updates are those of Ferrari. In Montreal we introduced an important package and then minor components and so Red Bull and McLaren. Only Ferrari seems to have no limits in this sense”. The complaints of Alonso and Sainz And Fernando Alonso also spoke on the same theme during the Thursday F1 press conferences: “It seems that the others have machines that print money in the factory, judging from the documents with the technical innovations published by the FIA on Friday”.
With him Carlos Sainz: “It’s not a problem that only concerns us. If you also question the other teams, I think everyone is wondering how the top teams manage to do what they have done so far in terms of developments. Looking only at the last five races, no one has brought more updates than the top teams. It’s truly impressive what they’ve managed to do.” The table confirms: Ferrari beats everyone. By consulting the official FIA documents from the Australian GP to the Austrian GP we have isolated the numerical data relating to the declared updates. Of course, each update has a different weight and cost, but there is no doubt a certain resourcefulness on the part of Ferrari which has brought 32 updates to date (29 performance) and only in Canada has it presented nothing new.
The situation is opposite to Mercedes, which brought 17 developments (15 performance), remaining without in China and Japan.
Alonso’s observations are understandable: Aston Martin only brought a very substantial package to Australia (from 8 developments) and two more in Japan (3) and Monaco (3), remaining to watch the others in five weekends. GP WITHOUT: races without even an update Racing now to stop later? Toto Wolff in his analysis had suggested to expect a certain rebalancing towards the end of the season: “We hope that towards the end of the season they will not be able to introduce new parts, while we will be able to bring more innovations. This suggests the logic”.
In short, will those who raced at the beginning then slow down from mid-season onwards in the race for updates in F1?
