Until now, SAIC was the only major Chinese manufacturer to offer only a single brand on European soil; in this case MG Motor (plus Maxus if we include the commercial vehicle). However, like BYD, Chery or Geely, SAIC also has various brands in its local market; in addition to those mentioned above, Roewe (ex-Rover), Wuling and Baojing, as well as IM Motor (pronounced “I am”).
Therefore, SAIC decided to distribute the latter in Europe to improve its market share. However, contrary to the strategy of other manufacturers, IM models will be integrated into the MG series, taking the name MG IM. Therefore they will be distributed in the MG network.
Already available in the UK, Norway and Switzerland
The MG IM series, which has been marketed in the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland since last July, will therefore also be expanded to the French, German, Belgian and Dutch markets from next July. It will initially feature two new D-segment vehicles, the MG IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV, both electric.
Compared to the current MG series, IM Motor badged models are at the top of the range. While the power of the models is announced as up to 751 hp, they will be equipped with four-wheel steering. On the battery side, they are based on 800 V architecture; It is compatible with charging powers over 350 kW and charges from 10% to 80% in just 17 minutes. IM Motor promises a range of up to 655 km (WLTP).
technology showcase
These models are also intended to be the technological showcase of the group of cars with the One-Touch iAD function, designed “to simplify complex maneuvers” according to the manufacturer. The system enables functions such as automatic parking, exiting, assisted reversing and curbside parking. The MG IM models on board offer a premium environment with a giant 26.3-inch screen.
IM Motor was born in 2020 from a partnership between SAIC and Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. The brand marketed 81,000 vehicles in China, below the planned hundred thousand units in 2025. This volume represented 2.8% of the 2.93 million vehicles produced by SAIC. The brand is in the same segment as Zeekr, XPeng or Nio but remains a second-tier player due to its volume. Apart from China, IM Motor is also sold in Australia, Thailand and Singapore.
