Kia Sonet 2027: New generation, platform, features, hybrid option

The Kia Sonet, the brand’s first compact crossover in India, debuted in September 2020 and received a facelift in January 2024. Now, reports indicate that an all-new second generation will hit the Indian market in 2027.This next-generation Sonet will move to the new K1 platform, replacing the current K2 architecture. As seen with the Syros, this platform supports the latest electrical and electronic (E&E) architecture, enabling over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics.Kia may also address the rear-seat space shortage in the new Sonet. For context, the previous-generation Hyundai Venue, the Sonet’s twin, faced the same issue. However, the new Venue features a 20 mm longer wheelbase of 2,520 mm, offering relatively more knee room.Under the hood, the engine lineup for the new Sonet is expected to carry over. This includes the 1.2-liter petrol engine producing 83 hp, the 1.0-liter turbo-petrol with 120 hp, and the 1.5-liter diesel generating 116 hp, along with their corresponding transmissions.Kia is known to be developing a strong hybrid powertrain for the Sonet, though technical details remain under wraps. This hybrid variant won’t debut with the SUV’s launch next year and isn’t expected until 2028 or 2029 at the earliest.Feature-wise, the current 10.25-inch driver display and touchscreen could be upgraded to larger 12.3-inch units. Another potential enhancement is a Level 2 ADAS camera and radar system, similar to the Syros, moving beyond the current model’s camera-based Level 1 setup.Overall, the new platform, added features, and hybrid option should make the Sonet more competitive, better positioning it against rivals like the Tata Nexon, Skoda Kylaq, Maruti Brezza, and Mahindra XUV 3XO in India.
