After public transportation, Karsan has now brought its autonomous driving technology to airport operations. The company’s Level-4 driverless vehicle, Autonomous e-ATAK, was tested in real operational traffic during demo drives held at İGA Istanbul Airport. The application, carried out in cooperation with Turkish Airlines and ADASTEC, revealed the potential of autonomous mobility in the field of aviation.

Karsan Otonom e-ATAK, which stands out as the world’s first Level-4 autonomous public transportation vehicle, took part in the apron area this time. The vehicle was driven under real operating conditions on a total of 11 kilometers of track at Istanbul Airport.

Two different operation scenarios were tested within the scope of the demo. While the first scenario simulated the transportation of shift crews to their work areas, the second scenario aimed to transport flight crews to aircraft parking positions. These tests, prepared in accordance with the real workflow, provided important data for the integration of autonomous systems into airport operations.
Karsan Otonom e-ATAK moved smoothly in the active traffic along with other service vehicles in the apron area. The route was completed safely thanks to the LiDAR, radar, camera and advanced sensor systems in the vehicle. During the tests, detection, navigation, security and emergency scenarios were also evaluated in detail.
Karsan Domestic Sales and Foreign Relations Deputy General Manager Muzaffer Arpacıoğlu said that the demo drive was of strategic importance in terms of showing that autonomous technology can be used not only in public transportation but also in different operational areas.
These tests, which were carried out in Istanbul after the successful demo process at Frankfurt Airport, also strengthened Karsan’s global growth targets in the field of autonomous mobility. The company aims to take a more active role in the transportation systems of the future with the advanced technology solutions it develops.
