Electric vehicle costs in Europe: segment by segment

Ayvens Car Cost Index 2026 analyzes the total cost of ownership of electric and combustion vehicles in Europe. Discover in which segments and countries electric vehicles win.
Ayvens Automobile Cost Index 2026 reveals that electric vehicles are gaining economic momentum, although not in every segment. The analysis considers the total cost of ownership, including depreciation, maintenance, energy, taxes and insurance. In Europe, electric cars are already cost competitive in most countries. Of the 30 countries analysed, it is cheaper in 17 for the small car segment, 19 for the compact car segment and 16 for the medium car segment. This trend is also emphasized in many southern European countries. However, Germany presents a different picture. An EV in the compact segment costs an average of 887 euros per month, only 8 euros less than the gasoline equivalent. In the small car category, electric cars are more expensive: 759 euros compared to 717 euros for the internal combustion engine. In the middle class, the difference also favors internal combustion engines for around 40 euros per month. The average cost of owning a car in Germany is 906 Euros per month. For electric ones, it is around 890 euros. Its main advantage lies in low energy consumption, but depreciation remains the largest expense. The study shows that the most economical electric vehicles are consolidated as a real alternative, although their benefits depend on the specific segment and usage conditions.
