It seems the Spanish performance brand Cupra has its heart set on leading the emerging market of small, performance-focused electric hatchbacks. Arriving early next year, the Cupra Raval is emerging as the designated “troublemaker” in this growing segment, promising a driving experience far more engaging than your average city runabout.

The Raval is the designated sporty sibling within the VW Group, and engineers gave it a unique feel by modifying the underlying architecture. While it shares the updated MEB+ platform with future models like the VW ID. Polo, the ID. Cross, and the Skoda Epiq, the Raval will handle differently. Cupra dropped the chassis 0.59 inches lower than its platform mates, stiffened the suspension, and added progressive steering to make it feel nimble.

Unlike some small EVs that still rely on drum brakes in the back, the Raval features disc brakes at both the front and rear axles. These targeted changes ensure the Raval lives up to its performance promise, differentiating itself immediately from other small, urban EVs being developed alongside it.

Measuring just over 13.1 ft long, the Raval slots firmly into the subcompact class. Yet, the brand makes it clear this little hatch aims for more than just trips to the supermarket. Customers will get to choose from three distinct versions at launch, each offering something that fits different needs and budgets.

Even the entry-level Dynamic trim comes ready to play, featuring a single, front-mounted electric motor that delivers 208 horsepower. This base model targets a driving range of 280 miles from a battery of an unspecified size. Stepping up to the Dynamic Plus trim brings a host of premium technology, including intelligent parking assistance, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), Matrix LED headlamps, and a 12-speaker audio system from Sennheiser, all while keeping the same punchy power output.

But for those drivers who demand the most performance, the flagship VZ trim promises to deliver a lot of fun. This version turns the wick up with a more powerful motor producing 233 horsepower. The VZ also receives additional performance enhancements, including an electronic differential, a sporty steering knuckle, and a 0.39 inches wider track for better stability.

The Raval VZ rolls on standard 19-inch wheels, which have a wild, circular-saw-style design – a look that certainly draws attention. This performance boost comes with a small trade-off, however, as the VZ’s maximum range drops slightly to 249 miles. Adaptive suspension dampers (Dynamic Chassis Control) are also available, though details on their standard availability are still pending.

Cupra plans for the Raval to launch with a starting price of around $30,500, marketing it as an affordable, yet enthusiast-focused option. Of course, the VZ trim will be more expensive, probably landing around $41,000. The manufacturer has indicated that after the initial performance-focused lineup hits the market, other less powerful and potentially more accessible trims could join the family, expanding the Raval’s appeal.
