BMW iX5 hydrogen: new flat storage system for greater autonomy

At the Beijing Auto Show, BMW is showing its new Hydrogen Flat Storage system for the iX5, which offers 750 km of autonomy and charges in 5 minutes. Mass production will start in 2028.

Unlike traditional systems that use separate tanks, a structure connected to a central valve has been chosen here. This allows for a more efficient layout within the body, improving overall performance and opening up new possibilities for the design of future hydrogen vehicles. Total storage capacity is approximately 7kg of hydrogen, giving the iX5 a range of up to 750km. This means BMW can produce hydrogen versions on the same production line as gasoline, hybrid and electric models, making mass production simpler and cheaper.
