Combining active and passive protection in a single device eliminates a fundamental tradeoff in EV high voltage fault protection design Sensata Technologies has introduced the Active + Passive PyroFuse, a high voltage protection device that combines system-triggered and current-driven circuit interruption in a single unit and addresses the limitations of relying on either mechanism alone. The STPS500P Series reduces component requirements and system complexity for electric vehicle (EV) OEMs by delivering millisecond error response regardless of the current level. Traditional circuit protection requires choosing between active solutions that depend on system signals and passive devices that respond to thermal or current conditions. PyroFuse uses a current-driven passive mechanism rather than a thermal element, enabling rapid interruption that protects contactors, busbars, and downstream components before damage occurs. Combining this with the pyrotechnic active trigger maintains protection even when upstream electronics or sensors are not present. “EV manufacturers have long had to work around the limitations of only active or only passive protection. Our Active + Passive PyroFuse eliminates this trade-off and helps our customers design safer, more resilient systems with less complexity,” Markus Schwabe, Executive Vice President of Automotive at Sensata Technologies, said in a statement. Faster interruption reduces peak energy exposure and short-circuit demands on contactors, allowing OEMs to reduce component sizes and simplify high-voltage architectures. PyroFuse complements Sensata’s existing portfolio of contactor, sensing and electrical protection technologies, positioning the company as the sole supplier option for integrated high-voltage safety.
