From SPIELBERG (AUSTRIA)
It left many open questions about Ferrari at the Red Bull Ring on Friday. The reds of Hamilton and Leclerc put a huge lead on Mercedes on a relatively short circuit, making them the fourth force behind McLaren and Red Bull. As revealed from the telemetry analysis, much of the difference is certainly due to a very conservative choice of engine mapping, where a few kilos of gasoline had to be added to simulate qualifying in the first two free practice sessions. However, in terms of race pace, tire management appeared to be more critical than its rivals, and despite a colder set (especially in line with Kimi), times were clearly up. Although they appeared fairly calm in public, a certain dissatisfaction was clearly evident within the Ferrari garage; Cavallino technicians were stunned not so much by the tires’ deterioration but by their inability to perform in aggressive track conditions and temperatures like those in Barcelona. Basic Simulator Pilots didn’t have any major complaints about balance, making it easy to find the right fixes. For this reason, very intensive work was carried out on the simulator in Maranello together with Antonio Giovinazzi last night and late into the night. We’ll see if there are any encouraging signs in the final free practice sessions.
