Finally on the track The big day, perhaps the most awaited moment of all the tests, has finally arrived. At 5.01pm on Thursday 29 January, just an hour before the end of the penultimate day available for the shakedown tests in Barcelona, the Aston Martin AMR26 – Adrian Newey’s long-awaited creation for this regulatory revolution – took to the track for the first time. It is impossible, for the moment, to clearly distinguish the shapes of the new single-seater that will be driven by Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll during the season, given that these shakedowns are behind closed doors and the only images available are those of some enthusiasts – mostly Alonso fans – who are perched on the hills surrounding the track armed with phones and video cameras to film the action on the track. Shortly after entering the track, the green team’s official social channels also posted a photo showing the car up close, as it leaves the garage. The shot, however, was published in black and white, further increasing the aura of mystery and curiosity around this single-seater. Obviously this is also the debut of the new Honda power unit, which from this year is linked to the Silverstone team after many years of collaboration with Red Bull. Tomorrow it’s Alonso’s turn. Lance Stroll was behind the wheel in these very first installation laps. Tomorrow however – barring mishaps which are naturally always possible – it will be Fernando Alonso’s turn to climb into the cockpit of that single-seater which could be the last of his infinite career. The Asturian’s hunt for the incredible dream of a third world title, exactly 20 years after his last world championship triumph, is about to begin.
