Even Sainz isn’t in it. Not only has Max Verstappen expressed his discontent with the rumored postponement to 2028 of the 60:40 split between hybrid and electric, despite the announcements at the beginning of May which ensured that it would be fully operational as early as next year.
Even Carlos Sainz didn’t have to wait and made his voice heard last Friday, an important voice given that the Spaniard is one of the two directors of the GPDA, the F1 drivers’ association. Sainz asks the FIA and FOM to be intransigent “There is a very interesting proposal for 2027, a proposal perfectly in line with the direction that in my opinion this sport should take. But unfortunately, as always happens, politics and the individual interests of the manufacturers are involved, who will oppose it and will try to direct things according to what they need”, said Sainz on Friday in Montreal. The Williams driver continued: “I ask the FIA and the FOM to be uncompromising on what they believe is right for the sport and, even if a vote is necessary, to remain firm in their beliefs and believe in what is right for the sport. If they were to ask only the drivers, we would all be in favor of going in that direction from 2027. Electric should be an addition and not something to be dependent on as now. 60:40 is never enough for the drivers, but we could race while waiting for real racing and real engines to return in 2030”, concluded Sainz.
