Renault will produce electric cars for Ford…
Renault Group and Ford have established a strategic partnership. One of its main focuses is the development of two Ford-branded electric models based on the platform of Renault’s electric vehicle division Ampere and their production in northern France.
The first of two new Ford electric models based on the Renault platform will be launched in early 2028, both automakers have announced. Renault: “The new models will be based on the Ampere platform and produced by the Renault Group in Northern France, leveraging the Renault Group’s strong electric vehicle assets and competitiveness, demonstrating the ‘cutting-edge’ production capacity and expertise of Ampere’s ElectriCity,” he said.
ford: “Designed by Ford, developed with Renault Group, the two vehicles will feature distinctive driving dynamics, authentic Ford brand DNA and intuitive experiences,” he added.
No further information was given about the two planned models. Therefore, it remains unclear in which segments the new electric Fords will be included or which platform of the French manufacturer will be used.
Ford currently offers four battery-electric passenger cars in Europe: the BEV version of the Puma and the Mustang Mach-E are both internally developed, while the Cologne-built Explorer and Capri electric SUVs use Volkswagen’s MEB platform. Besides cooperation on electric cars, Groupe Renault and Ford signed a letter of intent to work together on light commercial vehicles in Europe. The partners aim to explore the possibility of joint development and production of selected light commercial vehicles for the Renault and Ford brands. Ford already has a partnership with VW in this area.
Renault CEO François Provost: “This partnership demonstrates the strength of our partnership knowledge and competitiveness in Europe. In the long term, combining our strengths with Ford will make us more innovative and responsive in the fast-changing European automotive market.” he said.
Ford CEO Jim Farley added“The strategic partnership with Renault Group marks an important step for Ford and supports our strategy to build a highly efficient and future-proof business in Europe. By combining Renault Group’s industrial scale and electric vehicle assets with Ford’s iconic design and driving dynamics, we will create vehicles that are fun, competent and clearly in the spirit of Ford.”
