In accordance with a memorandum of understanding signed between Nissan, Wayve and Uber on the development of Robotaxi, a pilot project will be launched in Tokyo later this year using a Nissan Leaf equipped with Wayve AI Driver autonomous driving software, which will be available to users through the Uber app.
This project, Uber’s first driverless vehicle collaboration in Japan, is part of Wayve and Uber’s global Robotaxi program, which aims to offer this type of service in more than ten cities around the world, including London.
Initially, driverless vehicles will be staffed by a trained security operator.
Additionally, Tokyo, with its heavy traffic and complex infrastructure, will provide a complex testing environment for Wayve AI Driver software, which is designed to learn from real-world data and adapt to new roads and urban environments without using HD maps.
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. “Nissan is proud to contribute to a new era in mobility innovation,” said Ivan Espinosa, President and CEO. “The combination of Wayve’s AI technology, Uber network and Nissan vehicles is a tangible demonstration of our ability to make our vision of making smart mobility a part of everyday life a reality.”
