MAN Truck & Bus completed its first year of electric truck production with a production of approximately 1,300 vehicles. The company creates a flexible production model by producing electric and diesel trucks together on the same production line at its facility in Munich, placing electrification at the center of its decarbonization strategy.
Completing its first year of electric heavy vehicle production, MAN removed approximately 1,300 fully electric trucks from the mass production line during this period. Thus, while electric models became a natural part of daily production at the Munich factory, they played an important role in the brand’s transition to zero-emission transportation.
Mixed production model proves itself in its first year
The new production approach, which was put into operation a year ago, quickly proved to be an industrially successful system. In Munich, both the electric and diesel versions of the MAN TGS and TGX series are produced integratedly on a single production line. Thanks to this structure, vehicles can be produced flexibly according to orders, regardless of the powertrain used.
The factory has a daily production capacity of approximately 100 trucks, and this number does not vary depending on the drive system.
MAN Board Member Responsible for Production, Michael Kobriger, drew attention to the success of the system and made the following evaluation:
“Producing electric and diesel trucks on the same line has proven to be the right approach since the first year. This model provides us with flexibility in production planning and the opportunity to respond faster to customer demands.”
During the production process, components such as axles, fuel tanks and exhaust systems are installed in diesel vehicles, while battery packs and electric power transmission systems are installed in electric trucks. In parallel with this transformation, more than 5 thousand employees received special training on high voltage technologies.
Factory Manager Axel Karnasch summarized the success of the production structure with the following words:
“Producing electric and conventional trucks on the same line demonstrates the competence of our Munich facility. Quality and precision are always at the forefront here.”
Electric product range is expanding
As MAN continues to grow its electric vehicle portfolio, it plans to start mass production of light and medium-duty electric trucks at its facility in Kraków, Poland. In this context, production preparations for eTGL and eTGM models continue.
While the 12-ton eTGL is aimed to be put into mass production in a short time, it is stated that the 16-ton eTGM model will also be produced in the same facility. Thus, MAN’s electric truck range will cover all segments between 12 and 50 tons.
On the other hand, the facility in Nuremberg has undergone a significant transformation, turning not only from an engine production center into a technology center where battery production is also carried out.
Bus production also plays an important role in MAN’s electric transformation. While electric city buses have been produced at the Starachowice facility since 2020, the production of electric models continues at the Olifantsfontein facility in South Africa.
In addition, the production facility in Ankara is included in the production of electric city buses, and the Lion’s Coach E model is planned to be produced here in the future.
Demand for electric vehicles is increasing
Electric trucks have a wide range of uses, from distribution logistics to the construction industry, from long-distance transportation to municipal services. They can also be adapted for different applications such as fire brigade and special service vehicles.
Thanks to different battery configurations, the vehicles can offer a range of up to 830 kilometers and are equipped with systems with a gross capacity of up to 623 kWh.
The basis of this technology is the battery packs developed in Nuremberg. These packages can be customized according to the area of use and stand out as one of the most important factors that determine the performance of electric vehicles.
Electrification is at the center of the strategy
The majority of MAN’s total carbon emissions occur during the use of vehicles. Therefore, the electrification of the product range plays a critical role in achieving the company’s climate goals.
With the mass production of the eTGX and eTGS models in Munich, the company left the prototype and test stages behind and moved into full-scale production.
Electric trucks are no longer just a pilot project, but have become mass production products that are actively used in daily operations and directly contribute to emission reduction.
The company is also transforming its own logistics processes with electrification. While the use of fully electric trucks in the logistics network will be increased by 2025, it is aimed to operate up to 165 million kilometers per year. These vehicles have already started to actively serve in fleets.
