GM has released a new safety recall for the GMC Hummer EV in response to a potential issue wherein the vehicle’s passenger airbag may fail to properly deploy in a collision.
The problem: according to General Motors, certain units of the GMC Hummer EV may be equipped with a front passenger airbag that could fail to deploy as intended in a collision. The issue is believed to be related to an improperly crimped wire, and was traced back to the wire harness supplier, which implemented a manual crimping process over a three-day period during which the supplier’s automatic crimping machine was down for maintenance, and as such, some of the crimps do not create a secure connection. The issue may result in an airbag warning light illuminating on the instrument panel
The hazards: if the front passenger air bag fails to deploy in a collision, it could potentially increase the risk of an injury.
The fix: to fix this issue, GM is instructing dealers to install a jumper harness that will replace the section of the wiring harness that includes the passenger front airbag connector in question. This fix will be provided to the customer free of charge.
