Chevy Silverado 4500, 5500 And 6500 Units Recalled For Brake Wire Harness Issue

GM has released a new safety recall for select units of the Chevy Silverado MD, or 4500 HD, 5500 HD and 6500 HD series trucks, over a brake wire harness issue stemming from a previous recall fix.

The problem: according to GM recall number N252531990, protective tape is missing from the brake system wire harness. In the GM recall N242482680 remedy procedure released this past summer, Navistar omitted to include the application of protective tape on the wire harness of select vehicles. As a reminder, Navistar builds the Silverado Medium Duty units for GM at its Springfield, Ohio plant.

The hazards: if one or more of these wires are chafed or rubbed through, a “service brake system” malfunction indicator lamp may light up in the driver instrument cluster. In addition, if the wires become damaged, the Chevy Silverado MD’s brake system could fail to provide brake assist when needed, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: dealers will remove the installed wire harness, apply the protective tape, and reinstall the harness on affected vehicles.

It’s worth mentioning that the 2021 through 2024 model-year units involved in recall N242482680 are not included in this new recall.

Number of affected vehicles: GM and Navistar have identified 39 units of the Silverado 4500 HD, 640 units of the Silverado 5500 HD, and 212 units of the Silverado 6500 HD, for a total of 891 vehicles involved in this latest recall.

Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles with letters mailed by December 22^nd, 2025, and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealer.
