The recap of the three days Despite the closed doors, practically all the teams provided data relating to the laps completed, useful for drawing a first picture regarding the reliability from team to team.
In front of everyone is Mercedes, capable of concluding the Barcelona tests by covering an impressive 500 laps – equal to 2325 kilometers -, equivalent to over 7 and a half Barcelona Grands Prix.
Second position for Ferrari, which also encountered rain on Day2, which closed the Shakedown with 440 laps, equivalent to over six and a half grands prix on the Circuit de Catalunya. Scrolling through the ranking of what we could call the “Reliability Grand Prix”, it is worth mentioning the sixth position of Red Bull at 303 and the seventh of world champions McLaren, struggling with some unexpected problems, which stopped at 243.
Bringing up the rear are Aston Martin with only 65 laps – and which basically took advantage of the last day for an initial test – and clearly Williams, which did not show up in Barcelona. The Mercedes engine stands out here too, breaking through 1100 laps between the official team, Alpine and McLaren. Ferrari replicates second position, just under 1000 by also adding Haas and Cadillac customers. Red Bull can be satisfied with the first home-produced engine, with over 600 laps together with Racing Bulls.
Some youth problems for Audi, 240 laps in total. Honda suffered from Aston Martin’s delay: it is last with 66 laps – the exact total of a Barcelona GP.
On the subject of power units, it should be underlined that the teams were able to run with petrol that did not comply with the regulations, due to an exception granted by the FIA. But we will need to act quickly to approve the new fuels: there are six days of testing left and then it will already be the Australian Grand Prix. Barcelona test, the GP of reliability is won by Mercedes. But Ferrari is close behind
