The Alpine A290 has won the ‘Performance Car of the Year’ title at the 2025 Scottish Car of the Year (SCOTY) Awards, after Scotland’s most experienced motoring journalists recognised Alpine’s all-electric hot hatch for its dynamic handling, engaging personality and distinctive styling. The award places the A290 at the top of the performance category in one of the UK’s most respected automotive competitions.
The awards, organised by the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers (ASMW) and held annually since 1997, celebrate the best new cars on the market, with the judging panel evaluating eligible vehicles on factors such as style, comfort, practicality, performance and value for money.
Outlining the factors that saw the Alpine A290 claim the performance crown against tough competition, ASMW President Ally Ballingall said: “The Alpine A290 won the Performance award by delivering an exhilarating mix of nimble handling and dynamic power. Judges were impressed by its sharp steering, agile chassis, and engaging driving character. Its distinctive styling perfectly complements the thrilling driving experience. The A290 truly embodies pure, unfiltered driving excitement.”
Nicola Burnside, Brand Director, Alpine UK, said: “This recognition highlights exactly why the Alpine A290 is already selling so well in the UK. It shows that an electric performance car really can feel alive in your hands, and be full of precision and personality. The A290 represents an important step for Alpine – not just as our first electric model, but as a car that expands what drivers can expect from an EV.”
The Alpine A290 has been engineered to distil Alpine’s motorsport-inspired precision into a compact, fully electric format. Developed with a focus on agility, feel and responsiveness, it brings the brand’s lightweight philosophy into the EV age. Its chassis tuning, multilink rear suspension and driver-focused cockpit all contribute to a car that prioritises control and connection.
Priced from £32,000 on-the-road including the Government’s Electric Car Grant, the Alpine A290 is available in four trims – GT, GT Premium, GT Performance, and GTS – and features a 52kWh battery paired with either a 180hp or 220hp electric motor.
