The smart brand, which was discontinued in North America six years ago and is now equally owned by Mercedes-Benz and Chinese automaker Geely, has moved on from quirky microcars and into crossover territory. And how.Its current lineup consists of three models—called #1, #3 and #5. However, the fourth one on the way is even larger and, surprisingly, not a crossover but rather a conventional sedan. Some of the pictures you see here come from the company’s Weibo account in China. Others in the photo gallery up top come from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which has a habit of revealing new vehicles before they hit the market.Photo: smartCalled #6 (pronounced “hashtag-6”), the car stands 4,906 mm long (with a wheelbase of 2,926 mm) and 1,922 mm wide, which is equivalent to a midsize sedan—very close in fact to a Mercedes-Benz E-Class—or almost twice the length of the late fortwo.Add large 20-inch wheels and an overall weight of up to 2,099 kg, and you get a giant of a smart.Photo: smartThere are no interior images available yet. As for performance, the #6 is a plug-in hybrid that uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine and an electric motor producing a combined 429 horsepower. It’s said to be capable of traveling 285 km on electric power alone and 1,810 km in total. Of course, these figures are for China only and don’t reflect North American driving habits at all.The smart #6 will go on sale locally sometime in 2026. Meanwhile, in Europe, a #2 model attempting to revive the fortwo is coming up.
Upcoming smart #6 is as Big as a Mercedes-Benz E-Class
