Toyota has officially ruled out launching a fully electric RAV4, opting to focus on its bZ lineup, including the updated bZ4X with improved range and sales growth.
Toyota has officially ruled out the launch of a fully electric RAV4, despite high demand in the segment and competition from the Tesla Model Y. The company confirmed it is focusing on a separate electric vehicle lineup, where the updated bZ4X plays a key role, having already shown sales growth of up to 300% in certain markets.Chief engineer Yoshinori Futonagane stated clearly that while many things are possible, Toyota is not currently considering an electric RAV4.He explained that the company adheres to a multi-pathway strategy, developing gasoline, hybrid, and electric models in parallel without blending concepts within a single nameplate. This approach means the RAV4 will remain either a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, while fully electric technologies will be developed in the separate bZ lineup. The practical alternative to a RAV4 EV has become the updated Toyota bZ4X. This model is comparable in size to the RAV4 and has received key improvements, including increased range, faster charging, and updated electronics.A. KrivonosovThe results are already visible. In Australia, sales have surged by 300% since the start of the year, while in the U.S., the 2026 version ranks third among electric vehicles, trailing only the Tesla Model Y and Model 3.Additionally, Toyota is strengthening its electric SUV lineup with the C-HR+ and the off-road bZ Woodland variant, covering different segments without tying them to the RAV4 name. The RAV4 itself remains a key model for the brand and continues to evolve as a hybrid. In 2026, a new PHEV version was introduced with a larger battery and SiC semiconductors, boosting the electric range to 150 km—a 58% increase over the previous version.Forgoing a RAV4 EV is not a step backward but a confirmation of Toyota’s strategy. The company is deliberately separating hybrids and electric vehicles into distinct lineups, betting on bZ as a standalone EV brand. For the market, this means clearer positioning but also the absence of a direct electric competitor to the Model Y under the RAV4 name.
