Compression ratio, what’s going on? After last week’s meetings, great confusion still reigns regarding the resolution of the case relating to the compression ratio of the Mercedes power unit – which would vary depending on the measurement at room temperature.
According to Craig Slater of Sky Sport UK, the opposing motorsports manufacturers (Audi, Ferrari, Honda and Red Bull) are looking for the so-called ‘qualified majority’ to force a regulation change during the current season, but 6 votes out of 7 would be needed – in addition to the furious rivals also the FIA and Liberty Media. Alonso trusts but… On the sidelines of the presentation of the Aston Martin AMR26, Fernando Alonso responded to Marca to a specific question on the issue of the compression ratio trick, initially remaining vague: “I don’t know. I honestly don’t know the details and I’m not sure of the benefits. I’m not an expert on the subject and therefore I trust the FIA for control and supervision and I trust Honda and Aramco to have a sufficiently competitive engine.” Alonso then added: “Obviously it would be good to have the same rules and conditions for everyone. It’s not good to start behind someone who is exploring something that wasn’t meant to be explored. But this is Formula 1 too, so you have to understand that everything that happens is controlled by the FIA and you have to accept the final decision,” concluded the 44-year-old double world champion.
