The victory at Yas Marina It was 2016 when Nico Rosberg, at the end of the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi, became world champion after a long challenge entirely at Mercedes with teammate Lewis Hamilton. A success that put an end to the latter’s domination that began in 2014, and which allowed the German driver to enter the F1 roll of honor like his father Keke did in 1982. A case of father-son champions that, before the Rosberg family, only Graham and Damon Hill managed. The sensational withdrawal. Why? Yet, only a week after the victory, the then driver of the Mercedes W07 #6 surprisingly announced his retirement from Formula 1 and racing. A choice that surprised everyone, and still considered one of the most unexpected ever. Nine years later, Rosberg himself returned to that decision on Sky F1, clarifying his reasons: “I had already made my decision on the start/finish line. Everyone does it in their own way – he explained to former driver Martin Brundle – I felt like I was at the top and I wanted to leave at the top. It seemed like a beautiful moment after a long career. So, personally, it was really the right thing. I know that many were disappointed, because at the time it was a battle great.” Not like Norris Focusing instead on the present and what recently happened again in Abu Dhabi, where Lando Norris also became world champion for the first time, Rosberg expressed his opinion on what the British driver’s choice could be, completely different from his own: “In Lando’s case, I’m sure he’s not even thinking about such a scenario, and he still thinks he still has many fantastic years ahead of him. Of course he’s also younger than me at the time, but everyone does it in their own way.”
Rosberg confident: “I wanted to retire at the top, Norris is not thinking of a similar scenario”
