With the unveiling of the name of Chevrolet’s future utility vehicle in the country, General Motors officially announced that the upcoming Chevy Sonic crossover will be manufactured at the GM Gravataí plant in Brazil.
The automaker’s Brazilian subsidiary has just confirmed that the upcoming Chevy Sonic crossover will be manufactured at the GM Gravataí plant located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, known as the birthplace and main production center of the popular Chevy Onix. As such, the Sonic crossover will roll down the production lines of GM’s high-volume plant and expand the brand’s range of subcompact vehicles in South America.
“The new Sonic SUV will be produced at the Gravataí plant in Rio Grande do Sul. The factory is known for its focus on high-volume vehicles and plays a strategic role as an export hub for GM in South America,” said GM Brazil. “More details about the design, dimensions, engine, and technologies of the new Chevrolet Sonic will be revealed soon,” the company added.
In particular, the upcoming Chevy Sonic crossover will become the second Chevrolet model manufactured at the Gravataí complex and is the result of the 1.2-million R$ investment for the factory announced in July 2024. For the past six years, the facility has been exclusively manufacturing the second-generation Chevy Onix in its two body versions, which includes the standard five-door hatchback and the Onix Plus sedan, following the end of the Chevy Prisma.
As we’ve reported, the Chevy Sonic crossover is closely related to the Chevy Onix as a flagship product of the GM Gravatai plant, utilizing the same variant of the GM GEM platform and the general body structure of the hatchback model. However, the Sonic crossover will be distinguished by a unique front and rear design, a higher stance with increased ground clearance, fender flares with plastic cladding, and roof rails.
The all-new 2027 Chevy Sonic crossover is expected to make its global debut early next year in Brazil, introducing the brand to the rapidly growing entry-level hatchback SUV segment in South America and other regions. Furthermore, the Sonic crossover may feature a flex-hybrid powertrain for the first time in the brand’s locally manufactured product lineup.
