Tesla’s deal with Sourcewell lets U.S. government agencies buy Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck EVs easily, bypassing lengthy bidding processes to boost EV adoption.
This agreement covers the Tesla Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck, along with potentially other vehicles the company may release in the future. It marks a significant step in expanding Tesla’s presence within the U.S. government sector, where traditional procurement processes have historically slowed the adoption of electric vehicles. The deal enables eligible institutions—including city administrations, school districts, state governments, and higher education facilities—to purchase Tesla vehicles directly through Sourcewell. This bypasses the need for conducting their own lengthy competitive bidding or application procedures.Vehicle prices are pre-negotiated and capped at a maximum, ensuring transparency and predictability. Institutions simply need to register an account with Sourcewell online or by phone and place orders under the existing contract. For Tesla, this agreement removes major barriers to fleet sales to government entities. Government procurement cycles often stretch to 12–18 months due to bidding requirements and committee reviews. By securing a master contract, Tesla gains immediate and simplified access to a vast customer base that previously faced challenges in adopting electric vehicles. The initial contract term is four years, effective until November 13, 2029, with the option to extend up to three times for one year each. This provides long-term stability for both parties.
