Newey and the Aston Martin bet The arrival of Adrian Newey in Aston Martin has generated a lot of expectations for the Silverstone team. And precisely for this reason the development delays seen in the Montmeló shakedown surprised those involved. The first kilometers of the new single-seater highlighted an interesting base, with extreme technical solutions – Newey-style – on the rear suspension. Little else can be said about the AMR26, which like all cars can only be evaluated starting from the official tests in Bahrain, where the teams will have much more data available, all the details of the single-seaters will be seen up close and the work programs of each team will be known. The British, now, can only hope in Newey’s ideas, in their potential and in the obsessive attention to detail already seen on the car. Brundle’s words Among those who want an Aston Martin at the top is former F1 driver Martin Brundle: “I hope so, for everyone’s sake, and not least for Fernando Alonso. Adrian’s cars tend to be rather homogeneous, and there don’t seem to be as many protruding elements as in other cars”, this is his comment to his compatriots on Sky Sports UK. “We have to assume he’s had some good ideas, but does he know the Aston Martin wind tunnel well? Will he get a correlation? Does he have the right people around him to interpret his brilliance? He’s got a tall order, right from the start.” If on the aerodynamic side Newey gives certainties, on the power unit front some doubts emerged: “Adrian was telling me that Honda has to make up ground, because it left and then came back. Let’s wait and see, but we know that Adrian will have an idea of how to make the most of the regulations. Let’s hope the car flies.”
