Experts define it as the greatest technical revolution of the last thirty years, if not in the entire history of Formula 1. The 2026 cars are created around a new generation of power units, with an electric power tripled compared to the past, reaching 50% of the overall one. All this poses great challenges in energy management, which also affect aerodynamic development, where the absolute priority is efficiency. It is a revolution that embraces every area of the single-seater, from the chassis to the brakes, through to the tires and fuel, as extensively covered on the pages of FormulaPassion. The heart of the revolution At the center of the 2026 single-seaters will continue to be the 1.6-litre V6s, but although the container is the same, the contents of the new combustion engines are profoundly different. The new technical regulation, in fact, has changed several parameters such as compression ratio, spark plug control and turbo pressure, forcing the development of new combustion strategies. As regards the hybrid, however, the MGU-H, the electric motor coupled to the turbo, disappears, but the power of the MGU-K increases, going from 120 to 350 kW. The biggest difficulty will be managing the battery charge to power the more powerful hybrid system, a task that will fall to both the driver and the control unit. The complex energy management made it a priority to reduce consumption, which is why the FIA thought of new aerodynamics based on the power unit, designed to be much more efficient. The ground effect disappears, but above all the spoilers will be mobile both at the front and at the rear, for three times greater effectiveness than the old DRS. However, it is an energy management device and no longer a tool to help in battles on the track, replaced by the new overtaking mode, a more aggressive mapping of the power unit that can be activated when the attacker is sufficiently close to the defender. The fight against weight therefore becomes another major issue, made even more complex by the introduction of more severe crash tests for the chassis. All this is also accompanied by the debut of the new Pirelli tyres, but above all of the new sustainable fuels, which can no longer be obtained from fossil fuels.
