The first official image of the ninth generation Volkswagen Golf begins to circulate. The German union IG Metall showed it to workers of the German company on Wednesday during a meeting in which the company reaffirmed its commitment to the Wolfsburg plant, which will continue to produce the Golf. According to what was reported by Autocar, the new model will arrive in 2028 and will be offered both with a combustion engine and in an electric version. The widespread image seems to portray this last variant, recognizable by the more external wheels and proportions that suggest the use of the new SSP architecture. Volkswagen Golf, towards the ninth generation The design shown highlights key changes compared to the current Golf. In particular, a more pronounced roof spoiler and a rounded rear stand out, choices aimed at improving not only aerodynamics but also efficiency and maximum autonomy. Andreas Mindt, head of design at the VW Group, explained that the new Golf will take cues from the brand’s most accessible electric range, namely models such as the ID Polo, ID Cross and the production version of the ID 1. But also from previous Golfs, for example the Mk7 labeled as a point of reference for the balance between historical continuity and innovation. Debut in 2028 Furthermore, it confirmed the desire to maintain physical controls for key functions such as climate control and volume. From a technical point of view, the electric version of the new Volkswagen Golf should adopt an 800V architecture and more advanced batteries to increase autonomy and charging speed. The combustion Golf, however, will remain in the price list as a heavily updated model, with a revised line to bring it stylistically closer to the EV and with hybrid engines. The electric vehicle could be called ID Golf to clearly distinguish itself from the thermal version. The basis of the SSP platform will be a new software architecture developed with Rivian.
