Will Cadillac’s F1 debut be more difficult than expected? The declared objective is to compete as quickly as possible with the other – and much more experienced – mid-table teams. A challenge for which the Cadillac F1 has been preparing for some time, and which has pushed the leaders of the General Motors group to rely on two mature and highly experienced drivers such as Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez: the best way, according to the management of the American team, to grow quickly and fight in the points since the start of the debut season in Formula 1. An objective which, however, according to former driver Johnny Herbert, could be far too ambitious. Johnny Herbert’s opinion For the 61-year-old Englishman, interviewed by the website JeffBet, the American team would instead be destined for the role of the bottom of the top racing series: “I believe that Cadillac will have to face a huge challenge on its debut in F1. The experience of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez will be useful, they are a little older, but this does not matter as long as they have the right motivation. The best example in this sense is Fernando Alonso. However, I think that Cadillac will be last in the ranking, because it’s a new team. In the modern world of technology and factories that teams have at their disposal, they will have to start from scratch and find their way.” In the meantime, the General Motors group has beaten all the other competitors to the punch, at least in the race to present something to the public in this period of great anticipation on the part of enthusiasts: on the afternoon of Tuesday 13 January it unveiled the provisional livery, in an all-black-carbon style, with which Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez will bring the Cadillac to its historic F1 debut in the shakedown tests in Barcelona, scheduled for next 26 to 30 January. “The current Formula 1 teams – adds Herbert – are already consolidated teams, who know very well what they are doing. This is why I believe that Cadillac will be the most disappointing team. Alpine must also take a step forward and cannot afford to disappoint like last season, on the contrary it will be necessary to demonstrate what it is capable of doing, especially with challengers such as Cadillac and Audi making their debut in the F1 paddock”.
